How to tell when extra support at home may help

Many families wait for a crisis before asking for help. A quieter approach is to notice patterns and explore support while you still have time to choose.

Look for repeated changes

Missed meals, unopened mail, skipped medications, falls, or a home that feels harder to manage can all be useful signals. One difficult day does not define someone. A pattern is worth discussing.

Start with the smallest helpful step

In-home support can begin with companionship, meal preparation, transportation, or a few hours of help each week. The goal is to support independence, not take it away.

Include the person in the decision

Talk about what feels difficult and what kind of help would feel respectful. When possible, let your loved one set the pace and priorities.
